A few people at the crab boil asked me to write a review to the Body Worlds
exhibition at the Denver Museum of Natural History
(http://www.dmns.org/main/en/).
I really really liked this show. It was very educational and quite
fascinating really. For those who don't know what this is, basically this
German scientist preserves bodies by infusing plastic into the tissues
(called plastinization).
I highly recommend getting tickets ahead of time, at least a day or more, if
you plan to attend, and show up between 15 minutes to half an hour early to
your appointed viewing time. Wear comfortable shoes. I recommend going
during the week, as Sunday morning was absolutely PACKED to the gills with
people.
We attended Sunday along with Eric's parents and sister. They didn't bring
the rugrats, but other people were not so courteous. On the Web site
somewhere it says no strollers allowed, however, this was not enforced.
Strollers were everywhere. I saw two children who were about 4-6 years old,
and they were so scared they were screaming (I don't blame them). This is
not age appropriate for anything younger than 7 years old, and it says so on
the Web site.
They start the exhibit out showing various bones and such, and full
skeletons and it works your way up to skeletons with skin on them, and
various positions. I daresay this is more an art exhibit than a biology
lesson. Some of the figures were beautiful. They also had a section on
embryonic development, and had a woman who had died with a fetus in her
womb. They showed diseased livers from alcoholism, lungs completely black
from smoking, hearts after a heart attack, brains after strokes, a complete
cross section of a morbidly obese man. The list goes on and on. It was
fascinating.
I think tickets are $20, but we got ours for $10 since the family has a
membership to the museum. Enjoy!
