So, for those that couldn't make it to Ted's house last week, let it
be known that by unanimous vote the homebrewers of Fort Collins will
henceforth be known as the Liquid Poets. The club such as it was will
be grafted onto the sproutshoot (acrospyre?) of the club I had begun
to prepare to start starting in the hopes of a more active, energetic
homebrew scene.
The response to Colin's new shop, and to the homebrew club's new
website [liquidpoets.com] have both been excellent, and seem to
coincide well with a moment of ripening for the Ft Collins
homebrewers.
There will be beer. There will be a steady meeting place. There will
be a summer BBQ. There will be dues. There will be a board of
directors (P, VP, Sec, Trsr, etc. which means I need volunteers!)
There will be group activities (e.g., A-B- tour next Sun.) and much
more, so gear up for good times, and please let me know who is
interested in pitching in to help run this thing. I need a year
commitment if possible for the board, as we will be voting for board
members at the end of each year. If that's more than you have, don't
worry; there's lots of opportunity to help out.
Some other ideas we'll be discussing at the next meeting:
* Taster committee, in charge of planning, arranging and purchasing
3-4 commercial examples of given styles every other month, along with
a basic BJCP styleguide presentation.
*Group brewmaster (or mistress!), to care lovingly for a 55g cask of
group brew, perhaps solera-style (wherein every three/four/six mo
there is a drawing for someone to brew 5g of chosen recipe, ferment,
submit to taste committee approval, then exchange that 5g for 5g of
communal cask - sound fun?)
*Competition manager, in charge of finding comps, notifying club
members, accepting dropoffs and mailing/delivering entries; hopefully
this will even grow into helping organizing Ft Collins' own comp!
*Brew class/lecture every other month (opposite commercial tasters) to
include yeast care (harvesting/washing/culturing/stepping, etc), water
profiling/treating specific to Ft Collins municipal supply, mash
chemistry and styles of mashing, and hop farming! Then there's the use
of adjuncts, building hardware, kegging setups - you name it. So if
you have something to share (and you do!) let me know and we'll stick
it in queu; this is a "group participation" homebrew club, so be ready
to share your foibles and findings. There's a lot of talent in this
town, and I'm bound and determined to spread it around!
Any other ideas for the world's most awesome brewclub, please just
drop me an email, or bring it to the meeting where we can all discuss
it. I hope everyone will be able to make it to the Feb 2 meet; I know
it's close to the previous one, but it's going to be seminal. Don't
miss it!
Yours in excellent beer
Taylor Caron
