The High Plains Drafters of Cheyenne Wyoming is hosting their 14th Annual
Eight Seconds of Froth on Saturday, July 12th. This is BJCP sanctioned
competition for all beer and mead/cider categories. This is my initial, directed email
to BJCP judges and other judges who have participated in previous 8 Seconds
of Froth competitions. We're solicting entries, but just as important, judges
and stewards. I appologize that many of you might receive multiple copies of
this announcement. However, I don't want to miss the opportunity to contact
many of you who might not be in the BJCP judge database.
Check out our website http://www.bbriggs.vcn.com/8seconds.html for
complete details including entry deadlines and entry drop off locations throughout
the Rocky Mountain front range.
This year's competition will be hosted by Altitude Chophouse and Brewery in
Laramie WY and one winning beer will be selected by brewmaster Nathan Venner to
be brewed and entered in this year's GABF Pro-Am competition. This year our
judging site will be at the Old Union Pacific Railroad Depot in Laramie WY and
will be held in conjuction with the 2008 Downtown Laramie Brewfest on July
12th.
This is the fourth year of our Aces of Clubs competition within a
competition. Homebrew clubs will be awarded points for each entry, judge and steward,
and for all 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners in each category also BOS beer and BOS
mead. The winning club receives a travelling trophy they get to hold on to for
the year. Previous winners have been Foam on the Range, Keg Ran Out Club,
and Liquid Poets.
IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION:
1. Entries are tentatively, due NLT 12 noon on Saturday, 5 July. Most of
our dropoff sites have stated that they plan to be open that afternoon so that
we can pick up your entries. I'd recomend not waiting until the last minute to
drop off your entries (everyone will be closed on Friday, the 4th of July)
and also verifying with you dropoff site that they will be open on 5 July--if
not please let me know and we'll make arrangements to pickup up from those sites
early and/or move them to another front range site which will be open the the
5th.
2. Judges and stewards thinking about spending Saturday night in Laramie
following the judging/awards ceremony should look into reserving their
accomodations soon. In addition to our competition, and the Laramie Brewer's Festival
there are several other things going on in Laramie that weekend.
3. If you're a homebrewer who has never judged at a BJCP/AHA sanctioned
competition before, consider volunteering to serve as a steward. You'll have the
opportunity to work at a table with two to three experience judges, hear their
comments, and often have a chance to also sample many of the entries.
4. Feel free to pass this information on to anyone else you think might be
interesting in either entering the competition and/or judging/stewarding.
5. And remember the actual judging/awards ceremony site will be in Laramie
Wyoming (not Cheyenne) this year!
Please contact Brian Mertz, windywy at aol.com to sign up to judge or steward or
if you have any questions regarding our competition. (I'll be attending the
2008 National Homebrewers Conference in Cincinnati OH this week, but I'll be
periodically checking my emails.)
