From windywy at aol.com Mon Apr 8 15:18:01 2013 From: windywy at aol.com (Brian Mertz) Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2013 17:18:01 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [FCBrewClub] 19th Annual Eight Seconds of Froth--11 May 2013 Message-ID: <8D002B5AF05184A-D94-29F9C@webmail-d275.sysops.aol.com> The High Plains Drafters of Cheyenne Wyoming is hosting their 19th Annual Eight Seconds of Froth on Saturday, May 11th. This is BJCP sanctioned competition for all beer and mead/cider categories. This is my initial, directed email to BJCP judges and other judges who have participated in previous 8 Seconds of Froth competitions. We're soliciting entries, but just as important, judges and stewards. I apologize that many of you might receive multiple copies of this announcement. However, I don't want to miss the opportunity to contact many of you who might not be in the BJCP judge database. Check out our website http://www.highplainsdrafters.com and click on the link for 8 Seconds of Froth for complete details including online entrant/entry and judge/steward registration, entry deadlines and entry drop off locations throughout the Rocky Mountain front range. If anyone has any problem with the online registration website, please contact me directly by email. Entries can be dropped off at several locations throughout the upper front range starting this Friday, April 12th thru noon, Saturday, April 27th. This year our judging and awards site will once again be at the historic Plains Hotel in downtown Cheyenne WY. This year's competition will be a qualifying event for the 2013 GABF Pro-AM competition. Brewmaster Nathan Venner of the Altitude Chophouse and Brewery in Laramie WY will be selecting one of the category winning beers to be brewed and entered in this year's 2013 GABF Pro-Am competition. This is also the 9th year of our Ace of Clubs competition within a competition. Homebrew clubs will be awarded points for each entry, judge and steward, and for all 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners in each category also BOS beer and BOS mead. The winning club receives our travelling trophy they get to hold on to for the year. Previous winners have been Foam on the Range-2005, Keg Ran Out Club-2006, Liquid Poets-2007, Keg Ran Out Club-2008, Superior HBC-2009, Rock Hoppers-2010, Rock Hoppers-2011 and High Plains Drafters-2012. IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION: 1. Entries are due NLT 12 noon on Saturday, April 27th 2. Judges and stewards thinking about spending Friday night prior to or Saturday night in Cheyenne following the judging/awards ceremony should consider staying at the Plains Hotel--check out the website for additional details and a discounted room rate which should be posted by this upcoming weekend. 3. This year our competition was selected by two homebrew clubs on opposite corners of the United States as a neutral judging site for an IPA brewing challenge between their clubs. The Oregon Brew Crew in Portland and the Tampa Bay Beers in Florida each plan to enter about 12 IPAs each in 8 Seconds of Froth to get feedback from our Rocky Mountain Front Range judges (and maybe to see if our judges know how to judge hoppy beers!). I expect this normally large style category to be much larger than normal. As a result, we are planning to schedule the judging for the IPA category on Sunday afternoon, May 7th?starting at about 1:00 pm. I?m anticipating that we will need at least 8 judges for this earlier judging session. Please contact me directly by email if you would like to judge. We are currently working out the details of the specific judging site in Cheyenne. 4. This competition is a great opportunity for new judges needing experience points to judge with a more experience judge or provisional judges to needing more judging experience prior to taking their sensory exams. 5. If you're a homebrewer who has never judged at a BJCP/AHA sanctioned competition before, consider volunteering to serve as a steward. You'll have the opportunity to work at a table with two to three experienced judges, hear their comments, and often have a chance to also sample many of the entries. 6. I?m also looking for several experienced mead judges for the mead/cider categories?and also the mead/cider BOS judging. Please contact me directly if you are interested in these categories. 7. Feel free to pass this information on to anyone else you think might be interesting in either entering the competition and/or judging/stewarding. Please contact me directly at windywy at aol.com if you have any problems or questions regarding our competition.
