Got a message from a friend today about an unpleasant end to his brew
day this weekend. His dog ate about an once or so of spent hops out of
a compost pile, and long story short, ended up with a quick trip to
the emergency vet. Thankfully the dog is OK (his wallet not so much),
but it was definitely an eye opener.
The ASPCA lists hops as poisonous to dogs
(http://www.aspcabehavior.org/articles/71/Foods-That-Are-Hazardous-to-Dogs-.aspx),
potentially causing hyperthermia and other life-threatening problems.
There was also a discussion about this on the AHA mailing list a while
ago, and while it seems like this is by no means 100%, certain breeds
and individual dogs seem to be much more susceptible.
A lot of people in the club have dogs and compost piles in your back
yards, so this is something to keep in mind. Losing a pet, or paying
for the trip to the vet is definitely something to avoid if possible.
I know I'm going to skip the compost pile for my spent hops from here on.

Rent a storage unit.
Sleep there.
Fill it with pancakes.
Leave.
