Hi Poets,
The next iron brewer challenge will be: Spruce tip beers. You should be able to start collecting (legally and without trespassing of course) spruce tips in a month or so. The judges will be looking for balance - when working up your recipe you want to come up with something a person would want to drink a whole pint of.
This Challenge also presents a unique opportunity. We will judge these beers at the June LP meeting. Our very own LP Slam, BJCP-sanctioned, homebrew competition will be held on June 3, so you can enter both. If you play your cards right, you could not only have a winning Iron Brewer entry, which comes with a cash prize and you get to pick the next iron brewer challenge, but if you also enter your beer into the LP Slam, you have a chance of ending up with a winning entry there, possibly a Best of Show, and possibly a Pro-Am, all within the span of a week. It's a great opportunity that everyone, from the greenest extract brewer to the most grizzled all-grain brewer, can take advantage of.
For those of you unfamiliar with Iron Brewer, this an intra-LP competition in which brewers are challenged to use a specific ingredient/not use an ingredient in a beer. They pay a $5 entry fee, the beers are judged, and the winner gets the $ and picks the next challenge. Past challenges have included:
No-hop/No Barley
No-hop beers
Non-oak wood-aged beers
Non stout/porter Coffee/tea
Flower Power
Soda/Candy
Chili
Cereal
Smoked
Attack of the Clones
Chocolate
Breakfast
So, do some homework - (There are some interesting historic Colonial
Beers made with spruce tips you could develop a recipe for, or you could consider adding them to any sort of style of your choice.) - and
get brewing.
Good Luck!
Rod Simpson
