Hey Poets,
Our next LP meeting will be at *The Mayor of Old Town on Thursday, February
7th @ 7:00 PM.*
We will have a beer social for the first ~ 15 min. You can bring any
homebrews you would like to share with the group.
1) We will be doing a tasting panel. If you have any beers (or meads and
ciders) that you want specific feedback on please bring them. This is an
opportunity to get very direct comments on beer attributes and style for
your good or bad beers. Also, if you have beer that you know has a
specific "problem" - bring it! This is a great educational opportunity to
train other people on beer attributes and taints.
2) We will be doing the next Iron Brewer Challenge at the February
meeting. This Iron brewing challenge is by Jesse McConnell and is
fortified beers with spirits. The goal is to create a drink that showcases
both a spirit(s) and a beer with balance and finesse. Note: It is illegal
to distill at home and we (the club) are not promoting making your own
spirit but merely blending your homebrew with a commercially available
product. Also, this excludes Bourbon or Whiskey Porters and Stouts since
those have already been done numerous times.
3) The next club-only completion is Barleywine Ales (BJCP 19B and 19C). We
will be choosing a beer to represent the club at the February meeting, so
if you have a barleywine that you think is good enough then please bring it
to the next meeting. Looking further ahead, the next club-only completion
is extract beers, where 50% or more of the fermentable sugars must come
from the use of malt extract. We will be judging these at the May meeting.
4) American Pale Ale (BJCP 10A) is the February style of the month. If
you have a one, please bring it for the table. We will also have some
commercial examples for this style. These discussions will be led by BJCP
judges and are a great opportunity to really dissect the diversity and
qualification for certain beer styles. For brewers who are interested in
learning how competition beer judging works - this is the table to be
seated at!
Also, the style of the month for the remainder of the year is listed below:
March – Sweet Stout (13B)
April – Weizen/Weissbier (15A)
May – Maibock / Helles Bock (5A)
June - Saison (16C)
July - Bohemian Pilsner (2B)
August - Belgian Tripel (18C)
September - Oktoberfest (3B)
October - Spice, Herb, or Vegetable (21A)
November - Imperial IPA (14C)
