Alrighty Poets, the Slam is upon us.
Below you'll find the basic details, and a list of volunteer positions.
[tl,dr: email me that you are fully open and available for anything we need
help with, and bottle up all the beers to win big]
This thing takes a lot of hands to make it happen, so we're counting on the
members to step in as much as possible.
New members, this is a great chance to "pay your dues" and be involved in
the club more than just passing beers around. Those that have been involved
in the Slam or other comp before, please reach out to me with help and
emotional support.
For those that have never participated in a competition, trust that there
will be help to walk you through, and you will have a blast. You'll likely
learn a ton about beer while you're at it.
Comp entry window is 8/26 - 9/7, coming up fast. Get those bottles cleaned
and grab your capper. We expect a full complement of Pro-Ams, and given the
short timing on the calendar your odds of scoring one may very well be
higher than normal. This is YOUR competition. Put those entries in! Our
local dropoffs are H&B, Soul Squared if you're north, Elevated
Fermentations for you southlanders.
Jason has put together a page on our site
<http://www.liquidpoets.com/annual-poetry-slam/> with the basics. (THANKS!)
There will be more info regarding drop-offs, pro-am opportunities, etc. But
refer there for the registration link where you can enlist as a judge or
steward as well as getting your entries in and paid for.
The judging itself will happen at NBB as in the last few years. We're super
thankful they'll host us again. Not many places in townthat can handle this
size of a comp. It's the usual two sessions on Saturday, one on Sunday,
then BOS and Pro-am operation, awards in the early evening.
*VOLUNTEERING*
Here's a fairly complete list of the help we need. I may be forgetting
something, but:
- Shwag collection - basically just hitting up the local breweries for
fun stuff, shirts, caps, gift cards, growlers (are they still a thing?),
bottle openers, whatever, to put out on the prize table. Some of this I can
do as we're negotiating the Pro-Ams, so I'll be in touch with whoever takes
this on so we're not hitting people twice. I been working on the H&B
vendors on our usual prize procurement, going well, but there's a bunch of
footwork here in town I won't be able to do on my own.
- Saturday the 8th, we'll need at least two people willing to make the
run to pick up entries. The furthest south will be Brew Hut in Cherry Creek
/ Aurora. We'll also be picking up from Soul Squared in Wellington, down in
Boulder, Longmont, Loveland. If you have a vehicle and are free that
Saturday, this is a HUGE help, and the club will pay for your gas and lunch
somewhere along the way.
- Sunday we will be sorting all of the entries. This is a fairly big
job, but many hands make light work. There's pizza. Expect maybe three
hours of finding entries, and putting on stickers. Not difficult but very
important.
- JUDGE DIRECTOR - The judge director manages all judging operations for
the competition. The judge director recruits judges, assigns judges to
categories, and handles all other judging issues. Rules allow for me as the
Comp Organizer to do this job, but it is really best split into two
positions. If you are BJCP ranked, please let me know you'd like to help
with this. Once the comp is underway the JD is allowed to judge as well.
- HEAD STEWARD - Operations manager for the competition, trains, and
assigns stewards to various competition tasks. Responsible for entries
entering and leaving the cooler, coordinating the stewards, ensuring
completion of paperwork. Liaison between the judges and the organizer and
registrar, answering questions. Much of this can be delegated further as
necessary during the comp. We need someone with stewarding experience
ideally, but someone had to it first ever, so if you're up for it, I want
to hear from you.
- JUDGES - I sent out a local call to BJCP judges, hopefully all of you
on there received that. Let me know if not. Non-BJCP people, we need you
too!! Each table will hopefully have a ranked judge, who will happily walk
a novice through evaluating the beer according to style, filling out the
judging sheet, etc. THIS is a fun opportunity to get your feet wet in
judging. (I believe Doug is working on a light-hearted judging session at
the next Poets meeting, so you'll even get a practice run beforehand. We
need LOTS of judges, so please step up and get in on the action. We'll have
lunch for you.
- STEWARDS - a VERY important job. We'll need a steward for each table,
responsible for running beers from the cooler, attending to the judges and
double-checking their paperwork, generally making sure the table runs
smoothly and efficiently. Want access to tastes of the best beers without
having to sort through them all? Steward a table. No comp experience
necessary. Lunch provided.
I think that's it. We have a lot of members. Please don't be shy about
stepping in if you are available, regardless of skill/experience.
I'm expecting a lot of Poets' entries, and with all of the great breweries
in town I fully bank on us sweeping the Pro-Am's at GABF next year. It's
all but guaranteed. AMARITE?!
